Scientific activity

Prof. Raimondi started his activity at the Institute of I Medical Clinic of the "La Sapienza" University, dedicating himself to clinical assistance in hospital wards and to diagnostic and experimental research, taking an interest in physiopathology, diagnostics and therapy investigations of various cadres of internalistic pathology with infectious and dysreactive etiology. The clinical and experimental contributions on infectious endocarditis and in particular one of the first observations of HIV infection in Italy are worthy of mention.

Subsequently he devoted himself, at the Laboratory of Experimental Cardioangiology and Cardiopulmonary Pathophysiology belonging to the Chair of Special Medical Pathology of the University "La Sapienza", to a research plan on the mechanisms of neuro-humoral regulation of circulation and breathing and in particular on the role of reflex control mechanisms starting from chemosensitive receptors located in skeletal muscle districts in the integration of cardiovascular and respiratory activity during physical activity in physiological conditions and in various pathophysiological and clinical situations (peripheral vascular diseases, arterial hypertension, cardiovascular insufficiency, etc..). These investigations have led to major acquisitions in the field of cardiovascular and respiratory pathophysiology since they have led to the demonstration of the existence in the skeletal muscles of a system of chemosensitive nerve receptors (chemoreceptors K and chemoreceptors P terminations of afferent fibers of group III and IV present in somatic nerves) with cardiovascular and respiratory action.

In the field of human pathology he worked at the Laboratory of Non-invasive Cardiovascular Diagnostics in the new structures of the University of Tor Vergata and at the Center for the Study of Hypertension of which he was responsible for the evaluation of the cardiovascular and respiratory response frameworks during selective muscle exercise test (selective ergometry), and cardiopulmonary functional assessment during ergometric test (cardiopulmonary ergometry), the pathophysiology of congestive insufficiency and the mechanisms of humoral and neuro-humoral regulation of the circulation with particular regard to the system of Atrial Natriuretic Factors (ANF).

More recently he has dealt with the dysregulation of blood pressure in various pathophysiological conditions and in particular in microgravity. In this context, he was coordinator of a research project in collaboration with 2 institutes of the CNR of Pisa funded by the Italian Space Agency for the application of new algorithms and mathematical models to cardiorespiratory diseases. In the period spent at the University of Tor Vergata (1980-2005), the interest of research was therefore turned to the study of: a. Mechanisms of humoral and neuro-humoral regulation of the circulation and in particular of the Endogenous Humoral Systems involved in the regulation of the cardiovascular homeostasis and in the maintenance of the hydro-saline balance. In this context, the investigations on the system of Atrial Natriuretic Factors (ANF), on their gene expression at myocardial and extramycardial (lung) level, on the mechanism of their cardiovascular action, and on their functional role in various physiopathological and clinical conditions, are worthy of attention. (arterial hypertension, cardiovascular insufficiency). b. Molecular mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of hereditary myocardiopathies with particular regard to the gene expression of ANF in various stages of hereditary cardiomyopathy in relation to the characteristics of the myocardial lesion and the onset of hemodynamic overload. c. Study of cardiovascular alterations in simulated microgravity conditions, dealing in particular with countermeasures to orthostatic hypotension induced by the absence of gravity

In the most recent period spent at the Sapienza University (2006-pres), the interest of research has been focused on the study of: a. Development of devices and mathematical models based on linear and non-linear analyzes applied to biological systems with particular regard to the study of cardiac variability and the relationship between blood pressure and heart rate in various physiological and pathological conditions (heart failure, psoriatic syndromes, disorders) cognitive neurological b. Coordination of interdisciplinary research groups based on the use of telemedicine in remote assistance, both in developing countries and in Italy in patients with cognitive and cardiovascular disorders. The first in collaboration with Costa D 'Ivory and the second with the Institute of Neurology of the University of Rome "Tor Vergata".

He is the author of over 200 scientific publications. The scientific research activity carried out by dr. Raimondi has been greatly appreciated and financed several times by National and International Research Organizations. In particular, Prof. Raimondi obtained Contributions and Contracts from the C.N.R., from the M.P.I. and M.U.R.S.T. (National and local projects), by the Italian Space Agency - A.S.I. and the European Space Agency - E.S.A. He has also been referee for journals published by the American Physiological Society.

Since 1999 he has been referee for M.U.R.S.T. for the evaluation of research projects of national interest.
